Team Fusion

The Team Fusion exercise has been designed to:

• Explore the management & leadership challenges in allocating workloads and assessing individual contributions in remote working environments

• Develop an understanding of how to use the resources of individual team members in task achievement, and become more aware of individual talents & skills

• Explore various techniques for developing trust, problem solving, generating solutions, creativity, consensus building, teamwork and decision making

• Explore the impact of time pressure and quality standards on individual and team performance

• Identify ways of creating flexible operational plans that can be adapted to cope with change and uncertainty

• Recognise the importance of creating effective communication systems and sharing and analysing information within these systems

• Encourage on-going reflection and review as part of a learning process in complex problem-solving

Why ‘Team Fusion’?

One definition of the word fusion is the ‘act or process of fusing or melting together’, but it is also used in cooking or in nuclear energy to make the ‘fused’ item more desirable than the separate individual items. This is also true of the processes by which a group of individuals becomes a high performing team- especially under the challenging teamworking conditions of working remotely from each other.

The name of this activity, TEAM FUSION, comes from the dining experience described by Jim Cain:

My friend Guido Cremonesi invited me to lunch at an Asian Fusion restaurant. The owner of this particular restaurant was meticulous about the cleanliness and organization of the establishment. While enjoying our lunch, we noticed that the owner was interviewing several new employees.

Having passed the first part of the interview, the owner presented the interviewees with the following challenge to test their ability to work together as a team.

Chopsticks at each table of this restaurant must be displayed at exactly the same height.

After each chopstick has been carefully washed and dried, waiters are to place ten chopsticks at the same height into wooden blocks at each table, in a very specific manner. They may put two chopsticks into the wooden container, or they can remove two chopsticks.

Guido and I watched as the prospective employees set about the task. At first, they were a bit baffled by the challenge, but soon they worked out a strategy and eventually, they were successful.

In the end, the owner hired them all.

This essentially became the process for the Team Fusion activity!
