Pressure Point is a strategic and complex project management activity.

A team debates the value of a range of organisational projects in order to make difficult resource allocation decisions, modelling the process of a decision and negotiation meeting for project prioritisation.

Pressure Point explores how the team members establish decision making criteria processes and how they can influence each other to change their perspectives and opinions. A second stage has been added to include managers considering sustainability within their decision making process. Both for-profit and not-for-profit options included.

The Pressure Point exercise runs as a board game with each participant taking on the management of a different specific project. Each project comprises a series of targets that must be achieved to gain budget. This budget offsets operational costs and enables that project to be maintained for a further period of time. As in real life, the operating environment is subject to change and the participants work with a mixture of known and unknown information. Team management decisions are required and the demands of the task must be balanced with team maintenance needs.


  • The importance of grasping the ‘big picture’ and the ability to maintain an overview of a situation when actively involved in individual/routine tasks.
  • The principles of effective team-working so that all participants can contribute fully to agreed team objectives and procedures.
  • The value of flexibility in thinking and in individual roles, moving from leadership to team member roles and making both individual and collaborative decisions.
  • The need to apply long-term thinking whilst still achieving short-term results.

Pressure Point originated as a request from the International Red Cross for a development exercise which they could use in their selection and training of highly qualified medical professionals who were likely to be managing complex, multilayered projects in emergency situations or disaster relief areas.

The Red Cross needed a tool which would enable them to observe managers and assess their potential, or existing skills in areas related to project management under pressure. These skills were so relevant to operational managers in a wide variety of organisations and industries that the activity was developed for more general use. A second version was added to meet an increasing need for managers to consider sustainability in their decision making.
